Prevention of dental diseases

Why do dental diseases occur?

One of the main causes of dental caries (and as a result of its complications) and gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) is plaque. There is a distinction between soft and hard (mineralized) dental plaque. Plaque is formed as a result of eating food (especially rich in carbohydrates) and consists of microorganisms that are in the oral cavity and their waste products. If the teeth are not cleaned well enough (improper individual oral hygiene), then soft dental plaque turns into hard plaque, which cannot be removed (removed) using ordinary means for individual oral hygiene at home. Soft and hard dental plaque has an irritating effect on the gums, which can lead to gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), and also contributes to the softening of the hard tissues of the teeth, which can lead to caries.

What can be done to prevent dental caries and gingivitis?

To prevent dental caries and gingivitis, it is necessary to carry out correct (full and regular) individual and professional hygiene of the oral cavity. The doctors of our clinic will teach you how to properly care for your oral cavity (what products to use, how and how often) and will professionally perform professional oral hygiene.

What is professional oral hygiene?

Professional oral hygiene is performed by a dentist and consists of removing soft and hard dental deposits and polishing the surface of the teeth using special methods.

What methods are used in professional oral hygiene?

In his practice, the dentist uses several methods  for professional oral hygiene:

  1. Removal of soft dental plaque and polishing of tooth surfaces using rubber cups for polishing pastes and special pastes.
  2. Removal of mineralized dental deposits (tartar) using ultrasonic or sound devices.
  3. Removal of heavily pigmented dental plaque (due to smoking, drinking coffee, tea, etc.) using the Air-Flow device (soda jet).

To whom, how and with what is the removal of soft dental plaque and polishing of tooth surfaces using polishing brushes and special pastes?

It is recommended to remove dental plaque and polish tooth surfaces using polishing brushes and special pastes:

The removal of dental deposits is carried out from all surfaces of the teeth of the upper and lower jaw, which are above the gums. It is carried out with the help of special brushes (cups) and pastes. In our clinic, we use special soft rubber cups for polishing pastes to prevent gum injury and Proxyt polishing paste from the German company Ivoclar Vivadent.

To whom, how and with what is the removal of mineralized dental deposits  (tartar) using ultrasound or sound devices?

Removal of mineralized dental deposits  (tartar) using ultrasonic or sound devices is recommended to carry out:

Dental plaque removal performed from all surfaces of the teeth of the upper and lower jaw, which are above the gums. It is carried out with the help of special ultrasonic and sound devices. In our clinic, we use a modern ultrasonic device Woodpecker UDS L, which has various application modes for the most effective and non-traumatic removal of mineralized dental deposits.

This method of removing dental deposits must be combined with the use of a rubber cup and polishing paste or with the Air-Flow device.

For whom, how and with what is professional oral hygiene performed using the Air-Flow device?

Professional oral hygiene using the Air-Flow device is recommended:

  • adults to remove highly pigmented dental plaque (as a result of smoking, drinking coffee, tea, etc.)

Removal of highly pigmented dental plaque is carried out from all surfaces of the teeth of the upper and lower jaw, which are above the gums. It is carried out using the Air-Flow device (sodojet).

Is it possible to combine these techniques?

Yes. Depending on the clinical situation, one of these techniques or their combination may be used.

How often should professional oral hygiene be performed to prevent caries and gum inflammation?

To prevent caries and inflammation of the gums, professional oral hygiene should be performed once every 6 months.

Does professional oral hygiene negatively affect the hard tissues of the tooth?

With proper professional oral hygiene performed no more than once every 3 months, there is no negative impact on the hard tissues of the tooth.

What will happen if you do not regularly perform professional oral hygiene?

If you do not regularly perform professional oral hygiene, it can lead to gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), and then to periodontitis (inflammation of all the tissues around the tooth), which can lead to mobility and tooth loss.
